The Twelfth Conference in Commemoration of academician Evgenii Mikhailovich Sergeev (Sergeevskie chteniya)

March 23-24, 2010

The twelfth All-Russia Scientific Conference ”Sergeevskie chteniya” in commemoration of the outstanding Soviet and Russian scholar, Past President IAEG academician Evgenii M. Sergeev (1914-1997) was held in Moscow, March 23-24, 2010. Traditionally, the conference was hosted by the Sergeev Institute of Environmental Geoscience, Russian Academy of Science as the annual session of the Scientific Council RAS on Environmental Geoscience, Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology. This year, the topic of the conference dealt with scientific substantiation of actualizing regulatory documents in engineering geological and engineering ecological prospecting. Due to the specific issues of discussion, this year the conference was organized in collaboration with the State Unitary Enterprise on Survey in Construction ("Rosstroyizyskaniya").

The two-day-long session included the plenary and sectional meetings. The official representatives of the state ministries and committees dealing with engineering geological and engineering ecological prospecting for construction purposes took part in the plenary meeting of "Sergeevskie chteniya". The plenary meeting was opened by the chairman of Scientific Council RAS on Environmental Geoscience, Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology, academician Victor I. Osipov, who delivered a report "Tasks for Actualizing Russian Standards and Norms in Engineering Geological Prospecting and Adapting Them to International Codes". The plenary meeting was followed by the following sections:

(1) General issues of regulating engineering geological and engineering ecological prospecting;

(2) Assessment of hazardous natural processes: engineering geological and engineering ecological prospecting in the areas of their development;

(3) Assessment of seismic hazard: engineering geological and engineering ecological prospecting in seismically active regions;

(4) Specific grounds: engineering geological and engineering ecological prospecting in the regions of their spreading;

(5) Field and laboratory methods of engineering geological and hydrogeological investigations. Classifications of grounds and groundwater in regulatory documents.

(6) Promising trends for the development of the regulatory documents in engineering geological and engineering ecological prospecting.

Within these six sectional meetings, 35 scientific reports were delivered. Their authors belong to research and production organizations, the higher school, and academic institutions. The conference was attended by more than 190 participants from 18 cities of Russia (Moscow, St. Petersburg, Ekaterinburg, Rostov-on-Don, Murmansk, Dzerzhinsk, Sochi, etc.) and CIS countries (Kyrgyzstan and Azerbaijan). The volume of conference proceedings (Sergeevskie chteniya. Volume 12, V.I. Osipov, Editor-in-chief, Moscow, RUDN Publishers, 2010, 490 pp.) was published with the financial support of RFBR (project no. 10-05-06013). We hope that this event will contribute to the further development of engineering survey in general; as well as engineering geological and engineering ecological prospecting, in particular.
