The paper presents a new theory of effective stresses in soils. Unlike the well-known K. Terzaghi's theory, it considers soil as a structured system with operating external and internal stresses of gravitational and physico-chemical origin. Stresses calculated with the consideration of both external and internal forces correspond to the actual effective stresses existing in a structured porous body. The article characterizes both groups of stresses and provides the equations for calculating total actual effective stresses in soils.

BASIS OF MONITORING SYSTEM ARRANGEMENT IN KARST-PRONE TERRITORIES (BY THE EXAMPLE OF PERM REGION)

Development of karst monitoring system in any specific territory appears to be a challenge. The monitoring system demands working out a preliminary decision and solving organizational and information problems. The paper presents the blocks of measures constituting the basis of karst monitoring system; which have been implemented for the most part in Perm region. Some of these measures are planned for the future.

SUBSTANTIATION OF MANAGING DECISIONS FOR MINIMIZING RISK OF GROUND WATER CONTAMINATION AT THE SITES OF MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE DISPOSAL

A new approach to the estimation of processes developing at the sites of municipal solid waste (MSW) disposal is suggested based on the present-day ideas about the organic matter transformation in a waste body during the entire «life cycle» of landfill. The choice of managing decisions for reclamation of MSW areas and for reducing risk of groundwater contamination is substantiated. The decisions depend on the results of prediction assessment and MSW impact on the environment.

The anthropogenic changes of permafrost are studied at the key sites in the European North, i.e., Koida settlement (Mezenskaya tundra), Nes settlement (Kanin peninsula), Shoina settlement (Kanin peninsula), Mezen settlement, lakes Vashutkini (Bol'shezemel'skaya tundra), Amderma (Yugorsky peninsula), and the northern part of the Vaigach island. Geocryological characteristics of sites are provided, and the main types of anthropogenic changes in permafrost conditions are described.

The buried soils in cyclic loess sequences of the East European and Central Asian regions are characterized. Subsidence correlation with depth, natural moisture, and porosity of buried soils is revealed. Correlation between the relative subsidence of buried soils and that of underlying and overlying loess horizons, as well as subsidence alteration by the buried soil profile is analyzed.

The article is devoted to the generation of physical-chemical model of double porosity in clayey soil. The main equations of physical-chemical double porosity mechanics are obtained. The comparison is presented and good agreement is proved between numerical simulation and experimental data.

The paper shows that the regional regularities of spatial variability in geocryological conditions in the Yamal-Nenetz autonomous okrug, the permafrost massif structure, cryogenic processes and related hummocky-depressional relief, in particular, control the areal trend in runoff parameters of Eocene-Quaternary aquifer as well as pollutant migration within the region. Assessment of geosystem resistance to technogenic impact with the account of global climate warming and degrading permafrost should be based on water-balance calculation taking into consideration the depth and capacity parameters of water bodies.
